What a day!!

Best field trip ever!

There is nothing like outdoors.

Sun on your face. Wind at your back.

You have always been comfortable in nature.

As a baby, you would not want to take a nap or go to bed. We joked that you just did not want to miss anything going on.

So, we would take a little stroll…and BAM. You were dreaming.

I spent many nights under the stars pushing you in the stroller.

We might be bundled up in our winter gear. It did not matter. Out we would go.

The second you felt the air, your breathing changed. You relaxed. You would drift off.

Just so peaceful.

Nature. A part of you.

When it rains, most people come in. We go out.

You would choose to work outside, rather than play inside.

Spreading mulch? You’re the guy.

Picking up hickory nuts? No problem.

Raking leaves? You’re on it.

We ate outside. We played outside. We WERE outside.

And usually always with a garden hose in your hand!

Grammy and Poppy took you to the playground every day.

You would play for hours.

Your absolute favorite thing in the world was to just walk around the yard.

Just walk. And walk. And walk.

We would trek laps around the yard all afternoon and all weekend long.

The purpose?  To admire every little thing and to find the most perfect stick.

I had to be extra careful once you figured out how to open the door.

At any given second you were gone.

Out into the yard.

Out into your world.

Grandma’s Valentine.

My Dad. Your Grandpa.

This man was the kindest, gentlest, most loving man I have ever known.

All he knew was how to love and he did so beautifully. Everyone around him could feel it.

He had nothing to prove and no one to impress.

Just love.

His quiet, simple ways were the heart of our family.

Grandma and Grandpa had a lasting love. The kind that goes on and on and on for thousands of years.

Diagnosed with lung cancer when I was 5 and spending much of his life in Johns Hopkins…Grandma was by his side.

Mulitple heart surgeries…Grandma was by his side.

Dialysis and kidney failure…Grandma was by his side.

Through all of his battles…Grandma was by his side.

He was so brave.

He stayed loving and sweet.

He was never bitter or discouraged.

He made the world a softer place.

A better place.

A more peaceful place.

When he left, it became harder.

It got darker.

It was tough trying to understand a world without that precious heart beating.

For me, it brightened a couple months later when you were born.

Your heart beating into this world.

Bringing back that love.

Draping a fine layer of peace over this place.

You share that same kind of gentleness.

You were perched on your guard stand and I was rolling the cart down the beach.

We became the best of friends. You were my most favorite person in the whole world.

And in ’98 you became my forever.

Nights at our house are often not at our house at all. Across the parking lot we hang out in Daddy’s office surrounded by computers and guns. It doesn’t sound very comfortable, but there’s no where more perfect in this world. We each have our own setup. In triangular formation we play. We play games and we laugh. And laugh. And laugh. And laugh. You will be rich in memories. No nights spent in front of a television for you, little man. No, we follow each other through deserts and forests. Explore caves and mine for diamonds and emeralds. Build houses and farms. Fight off Zombies and skeletons. Jump through portals and land in the Ender World. And of course sometimes, just sometimes, you create our own game within the game and we chase and battle each other. Always ending badly for me. Why are you laughing so much in the video? Because I can Not get away from you! No matter what. Just wait. Tomorrow night we play again! Game on.
