First: Trip to the Aquarium

Posted by Kim on Sunday Jun 20, 2010 Under First

Tru’s expression didn’t change much while we were at the aquarium. He was pretty much in a state of shock the whole time. He looked in astonishment at everything. He stared. And he stared. And he stared. I think maybe he blinked once or twice, but that’s about it. It was his first experience with the underwater world. I would love to know what he was thinking in his little head when he saw this…

A Few of My Favorite Things…Dahlias

Posted by Kim on Tuesday Jun 15, 2010 Under A Few of My Favorite Things...

The actual name is – Happy Single Party Dahlia. Now that sounds fun! Like something I want in my yard.  Like my mantra since Tru came along. So it’s setting the tone for my yard work this summer. Every year, for 10 years, I’ve tried to create a pretty yard. Nothing fancy-shmancy. Just neat and tidy. Hasn’t happened yet…the saga continues. But I feel different this year. This year might be the one. Tru has a way of motivating me in all kinds of ways. I want the house to look good for him, not that he cares. I want a yard for him to explore that has beautiful flowers for him to “touchy, touchy.” (His favorite thing to do!) So, we take morning trips to Lowe’s. We wander up and down and all around the lawn and garden department. Tru touches every petal he can get his little hands on. We oooh and aaah at the pretty plants. Then, finally, we choose something to take home. During his nap…I dig and plant our daily selection. It’s a very slow process. Slow and steady wins the race, right? That’s what I tell my students. Maybe by the end of summer I’ll be finished, and that’s ok. It’s the journey that’s most important. Our jaunts are fun and if my yard looks better at the end of all this, then good deal. Party on!

The Gift of Time

Posted by Kim on Saturday Jun 12, 2010 Under Photoetry

Time. Everyone wants more of it. Yet, ironically, everyone wastes it. Unappreciative. I try to honor time. It’s all we’ve got. When it’s gone, that’s it. You can never rewind or pause life. And one should never want to fast forward. When I was younger I spent the week waiting for the weekend and my dad told me not to wish my life away. As an adult, I have tried to use my time wisely to accomplish goals I set for myself. As a teacher, I plan each minute of the day, week, month, year to be certain I’m teaching everything a second grader needs to know. As a mom. Well, as a mom, I’m loving every beautiful minute with my boy. It’s cliche, but I promised myself (and Tru) when he was born that I was going to enjoy each moment and not take anything for granted. Tru comes first…and it’s been a struggle as a working mom. I never understood the big deal before. But now I’m walking in those shoes and it’s hard. I leave Tru by 7 a.m. and don’t see him again until the evening. Well, it’s summer and I’m off! I’m home all day, every day with Tru and my schedule is wide open. I don’t have to plan when to do laundry, or mop, do dishes or go to the market. I don’t have to squeeze play time in before dinner and bath. I’m free. I feel I’ve been given an incredible gift. I’ve been given the gift of time. The one thing I want with Tru and now, finally, I have it…and plenty of it! I’m going to cherish every second. Yeah, I still have dirty clothes, dirty floors, and dirty dishes, but I have time to be with Tru and I have his nap time to clean or relax on the porch swing…whatever I want. See, I have choices now. And that makes all the difference.

We have time for so much…

First: Dip in the Pool

Posted by Kim on Tuesday Jun 8, 2010 Under First

Tru paddled in a big swimming pool for the first time today. I don’t have actual pool pictures, because, obviously, I was in the pool with him. Imagine him laughing and watching every kid that moved. When the water splashed…he laughed even louder. (I think he was trying to get the kids to look at him.) BUT, I have these pics of him in his snazzy swimsuit. While I was blowing up the floaties, Tru kept walking over to me and putting his mouth on the floatie. He’d pick up the ones I was finished with and put the part I blew into to his mouth like he was going to do what he saw me do. Onto dressing…we were both laughing so hard when I was trying to get the inflatable suit on him that we barely made it. Getting ready for the pool was as much fun as being in the pool! What a boy!

Tru just loves to have fun. He has a spirit that’s unparalleled to any other. He wakes up ready to play. Will put off naps to play. And has even been caught laughing in his sleep. This one little boy knows how to have fun.
