What it Means

Posted by Kim on Sunday May 8, 2016 Under Photoetry, Tru Moments

What it means to me to be your mom…

It means scratches and marks all over the hardwood floors and dirty hand prints on the walls.

It means Lightning McQueen stickers on the refrigerator doors and chocolate smudges on the leather furniture.

It means playing like I am 7 years old, when clearly, I am not.

It means getting up to fix you a glass of water when I just got perfectly comfy in bed.

It means learning and playing LOTS of video games that I would NEVER play in a million years.

It means packing lunch when I really don’t feel like it.

It means being the butt of all the jokes, all the time.

Being your mom means having a home filled with tons of laughter and songs and dance. (I listen to the Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 song on repeat and the Minecraft song: 1 HOUR version “Girls Know How to Fight.”)

It means finding exquisite comfort and peace as we eat popcorn and watch a movie together on the couch with your little feet in my lap.

It also means feeling like I have stumbled across the fountain of youth and jump on a trampoline everyday and have epic Nerf battles.

Being your mom means getting excited when you are teaching me a new video game because you are so excited you that you jump up and down beside my computer and can not sit down. (And you cheer me on with really sweet compliments and words of encouragement even though I suck.)

It means having deep conversations with someone I respect and gaining a new perspective on life. Just yesterday you started a round of “Would You Rather” and asked me if I would rather have my house and no Tru or have Tru and no house? I immediately answered that I would give up everything if it meant not having my boy. You said, “Wow.” I asked why you were surprised and you said something along the lines that you only meant the house, not everything. I explained to you that none of it mattered if I did not have you. None of it. Then you posed question 2 – “Would you rather you be alive and not me or me alive and not you?” I answered, “You alive, not me.” And you quietly said, “That’s what I would want too.” 🙂

It also means feeling a sense of pride never imagined before. Any little achievement you make, is huge in my eyes. As a teacher I see all kids do all things. But to watch you experience something, touches a delicate part of my soul. It is a feeling of joy deep inside that bubbles up and over like champagne.

Being your mom means creating something more precious than even the Mona Lisa. Take that, da Vinci! You are a masterpiece. A living, breathing, piece of art designed by a greater love than mine alone.

It means having it all and loving it!

But, most of all it means the greatest honor life can bestow upon me is that of your mama.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I love you too much!!

Indigo Farms

Posted by Kim on Friday May 6, 2016 Under Tru Moments

Indigo Farms. A lovely, old place sitting back in the woods.

We go there all the time for lunch and to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables.

But today we went for your field trip and it was a whole new experience. 🙂

First of all…

the goats! I want a goat!

the hay ride! Escaping into the woods and rolling under the trees was today’s freedom.

Best of all…

picking strawberries! (and eating a few…get in my belly!)

Indigo Farms…always a treat.

I love you too much!

Q and A on the Trampoline

Posted by Kim on Thursday Apr 28, 2016 Under Tru Moments

We have lots of talks while jumping on the trampoline.

Talks about anything and everything.

This evening you asked, ” Mama, how many times does your heart beat in your life?”

“However many times God decides. He designed it,” I answered.

“Mama, how many times will mine beat?”

“I don’t know, but I hope a whole, whole lot. You’ve got a good heart.”

“Probably as many as Poppy. He’s like 80 and I’m just like him.”

“Let’s hope so. You are a little Poppy.”

I love you too much!

What to do on a gorgeous, spectacular SUNday?

Eat a popcorn snack on the trampoline. Duh!

And we shared with the puppies.

But all Lilu really wanted was her ball.

Then in for a rest.

Yeah. You asked for a bell.

I love you too much!

Lessons From the Flu

Posted by Kim on Friday Mar 25, 2016 Under Tru Moments

Here’s the deal. We have been sick.

Real sick.

I get sinus infections, but that’s about it.

The flu? Nuh-uh.

Haven’t been that sick in years and years and years.

Not being one to watch tv, I pretty much just stared at the walls. In silence. Deafening silence.

So, coming out of a week confined to my bedroom…I’ve learned a few things.

1. You are way tougher than me. You were sick too, but you never complained, whined, fussed, or acted ornery. Quite the opposite of me. You kept your manners and were the most cooperative patient.

2. Real love is revealed. Daddy stepped up. What started out as a little scary…

became filled with tiny blessings.

♥ He made me hot tea with honey at like 3 in the morning because I could not quit coughing.

♥ He did lots of grocery shopping!

♥ He cooked lunch and dinner every day.

♥ He did the laundry.

And my favorite…

♥ He rubbed alcohol on my back.

3. Friends are your greatest treasure. Everything at work was completely taken care of.

Andrea took on my morning hall duty and did plans for the next coming week.

Aimee did lesson plans for the four days I was out, collected field trip money, printed reports for report cards, and pulled my papers for copying.

You find out who is there for you. You find out who is real for you.

4. I have a really awesome tribe!

5. A little company goes a long way. Dogs are the best at everything.

6. I feel so overwhelmed by all of these little acts of kindness, that I realize when I finally do feel better, I am gonna do so much better.

7. Just how long the days and nights really are. What an abundance of time we have on our hands to do with as we please.

8. I sure do miss laughing. Laughter is essential to my soul.

9. Nature is the greatest remedy. Oh how nice, when I finally got to sit outside for a few minutes and feel the wind brush against me…a gentle whisper of calm. And to feel the sun touch my skin with little tickles of warmth. Ahhhhhh.

We are better now.

I love you too much!

Here’s the thing. We talk in hashtags now.

For fun.

But, honestly, neither of us fully understands hashtags!

It all started the other week when you were telling us about a bad dream you had.

At the end of your story you said, “#worstdreamever!”

I laughed. You laughed. Daddy laughed.

Now, it’s a thing. We throw it in all the time. Just for fun.

Earlier today we were sitting on the sofa watching a video about a game you play and you were eating a chocolate bar (#makingamess).

Our conversation went a little something like this:

Tru: #getyourlegoffofme

Mama: #benice

Tru: #doofymama

Mama: #imgonnatakeyourchocolatebarbacktokroger

Tru: #imgonnaeatitfirst

Mama: #messychocolatehands

Tru: #getmeawashcloth

O Kissmas Tree

Posted by Kim on Sunday Nov 22, 2015 Under Tru Moments

We have heard of tree-huggers.
But tree-kissers?

You LOVE picking out the tree. And we get one the day they grace the sidewalks.
You LOVE looking at the tree.
You LOVE studying each ornament.
You always have.
We would spend hours walking around the tree talking about each ornament.
Same stories every day for the month of December.
You wanted to hear them again and again.
Each day, like you were seeing it for the first time.
Each story, like you were hearing it for the first time.
We did this together.

You bring such fun and creativity to the little things we do.
You bring them with love.

I love you too much!

The 1,000-Year Storm

Posted by Kim on Friday Oct 9, 2015 Under Tru Moments

It rained like we have never seen rain before.
And then it rained some more.
But we survived the 1,000-year storm.

(That is a waterfall coming off the sidewalk.)

This could have easily been our street.
We are SO lucky our house was fine.
